EVENT: NSF Office of Polar Programs virtual office hours for information regarding NSF’s current operations

The Antarctic Sciences (ANT) and Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics (AIL) Sections in the Office of Polar Programs (OPP) will be hosting virtual office hours this week to share information with the academic community regarding NSF’s current operations. These office hours will also allow the community to ask questions, share concerns, and/or offer suggestions on how ANT/AIL can do more to address the impact of COVID-19 on researchers. NSF Office of Polar Programs notice regarding novel coronavirus

The outbreak of 2019 novel coronavirus, 2019-nCoV (coronavirus), is of serious concern to the Office of Polar Programs, which supports thousands of researchers, operational personnel, and other visitors to remote stations in the Arctic and Antarctica. As an immediate response, OPP augmented medical screening questions for personnel deploying to Antarctica and Greenland. Medical program staff evaluate responses to a set of diagnostic questions and check for fever. These measures are intended to prevent anyone exposed to coronavirus, Ebola, or other serious respiratory infection from traveling to field stations in the polar regions. Continue Reading

NSF’s Education and Human Resources (EHR) and Geosciences (GEO) directorates have formed a partnership to advance and develop understanding of learning environments that build upon the rich interdisciplinary resources emerging from polar investments. EHR’s Research on Learning (DRL) and Undergraduate Education (DUE) divisions and the Office of Polar Programs (OPP) encourage the submission of proposals to leverage NSF’s investments in polar sciences and infrastructure, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education research and development, to promote an informed citizenry and foster the next generation of scientists. A symposium on New Frontiers in Antarctic Marine Biology will be featured as a Society Wide Symposium at the 3-7 January 2020 meeting of the Society for Integrative & Comparative Biology in Austin, Texas. This symposium, funded in large part by the NSF Antarctic Organisms and Ecosystems program, follows in the footsteps of three highly successful, NSF-supported society-wide symposia on Antarctic marine biology that occurred ~ 10, 20, and 30 years ago, respectively.
