The Office of Polar Programs (OPP) has issued a "Dear Colleague Letter" (DCL) announcing a nationwide search for a Program Director in Polar Cyberinfrastructure. Formal consideration of applications will begin on July 10, 2019 and will continue until a selection is made. The program director will manage OPP's investments to advance cyberinfrastructure related to polar science and education and has the opportunity to shape future research directions. The successful candidate will be engaged in defining and communicating cyberinfrastructure needs through interactions with the research community, related research programs within OPP, in other divisions of NSF, and in other organizations external to NSF. A full-time 12-month (extendable to 24 or more) Postdoctoral Scholar (postdoc) position located in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, Oregon State University is available. For full consideration apply by May 15, 2019. The successful applicant will join a team of glaciologists, atmospheric scientists, and oceanographers studying the Thwaites Glacier and Amundsen Sea System in Antarctica. This project (TARSAN: Thwaites-Amundsen Regional Survey and Network) focuses on the interactions between the floating ice shelves and the ocean circulation in the Amundsen Sea. Continue Reading
Advances in Polar Science (APS) will publish a special issue with the theme ‘Polar Regions in the Global Climate System’ as a lasting outcome of the 8th Malaysian International Seminar on Antarctica, which will be held from the 18th to the 20th of June 2019, at Universiti Putra Malaysia. The National Science Foundation (NSF) has publicly communicated its commitment to promoting safe, productive research and education environments for current and future scientists and engineers, including efforts to help reduce sexual harassment and other forms of harassment in STEM contexts. Recently, to learn about the challenges related to sexual harassment in STEM settings, NSF and other organizations funded the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) to conduct a study on the prevalence and impact of sexual harassment in science and engineering departments and programs. Through this Dear Colleague Letter (DCL), the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Section for Arctic Sciences (ARC) of the Office of Polar Programs announces its interest in proposals to repurpose a subset of stations of the Alaska Transportable Array. The National Science Board (NSB) has authorized the National Science Foundation (NSF) to move forward with the Antarctic Infrastructure Modernization for Science (AIMS) project. AIMS is planned as a 10-year undertaking to overhaul McMurdo Station into an energy- and operationally efficient platform from which to support world-class science. Continue Reading
The Office of Polar Programs (OPP) is the designated single point manager for the United States Antarctic Program. The Antarctic Sciences Section (ANT) supports research in all areas of science in Antarctica and works in close collaboration with OPP's Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics Section (AIL), other parts of OPP and NSF, other U.S. Agencies, and National programs in other countries in supporting forefront research in Antarctica. The OPP Advisory Committee has drafted a succinct and broad synthesis of recommended priorities for OPP research investments in the document. The document, An Advisory Overview for the Office of Polar Programs, is based on reports developed by the science and science-support communities over the past five years. The synthesized priorities will help inform science-funding leadership, other NSF advisory committees and others. The Next Generation Polar Research Conference (NGRP-3) is designed to train and network early career polar researchers for interdisciplinary research careers. This is a second announcement for the U.S. Ice Drilling Program (IDP) Subglacial Access Science Planning Workshop in Herndon, Virginia, which will take place on March 29-30, 2019. The primary objective of this workshop is to provide focused feedback from subglacial research community into the IDP Long Range Science Plan. Specifically, we seek to stimulate discussions that will yield a prioritized list of science objectives and associated targets and requirements (sampling, drilling and support needs) for the coming decade for the 2019 update to the IDP Long Range Science Plan.
