The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), a specialist institute of the University of Tasmania, is an internationally-recognised leader in marine and Antarctic research and education. In 2017, the Centre for World University Rankings placed the University in the top ten in the world for fisheries science, marine and freshwater biology, and oceanography, based on the performance of IMAS.

The Executive Director IMAS will lead the next chapter of the Institute’s development to be one of the top three marine research institutes globally with pre-eminence in its fields of expertise. The Executive Director will expand and build the Institute’s reputation for excellence, maintain its brand strength and integrity, and position IMAS to grow in stature through sound commercial activities and sustainable and productive relationships with academia, industry, research institutes and governments in Australia and internationally.

This position is a unique opportunity for a highly strategic, creative and visionary marine and/or Antarctic leader with sophisticated interpersonal skills, business acumen, high energy and passion for excellence. Superior negotiation skills and the capacity to manage change, drive new relationships and influence policy are essential for leading IMAS through this period of transformation and growth. The successful candidate will have a PhD or an equivalent qualification and successful senior leadership experience in a complex and dynamic organisation. The role is located in Hobart for an initial term of five years.
