The National Science Foundation is seeking a qualified candidate for an Antarctic Organisms and Ecosystems (AOE) program director’s position within its Office of Polar Programs’ (OPP) Antarctic Sciences Section at NSF’s Alexandria, Va. Headquarters.
Candidates for either permanent or temporary appointments will be considered. See links below.
NOTE: Deployment as NSF Science Representative in Antarctica for periods of several weeks each year is an essential requirement for this position. This requires that the program officer be cleared medically for remote deployment.
The AOE program director manages a proposal-driven grants program, and oversees a research portfolio, directed at all levels of biologically related organization from molecular, cellular, and organismal, to communities, ecosystems, and global processes. The program director has the opportunity to shape the direction of the program through interactions with the research community, related research programs within the section, other NSF divisions, and organizations external to NSF.
Applicants do not have to have prior Antarctic section or polar experience to be considered but must have demonstrated experience leading an active biological research portfolio.
OPP, which is part of the Directorate for Geosciences OPP, manages the U.S. Antarctic Program, through which it supports scientific research in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, with logistical support provided by OPP’s Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics Section.
The Antarctic Sciences Section supports cutting-edge research that:
- expands fundamental knowledge of the Antarctic, and the natural laboratory it represents, across a range of disciplines,
- improves understanding of interactions between the Antarctic and Southern Ocean region and Earth system, and
- uses the unique characteristics of the Antarctic continent as an observing platform.
