Session Description: Hot water drilling including clean access technologies provides a means of observing, measuring and sampling the subglacial and sub-ice shelf environment. Shared platforms make for integrated glaciological, geological, oceanographic and biological study.

The WISSARD (Whillans Ice Stream Subglacial Access Research Drilling) project drilled the downstream end of the Whillans Ice Stream in West Antarctica, penetrating Subglacial Lake Whillans (2013) and the Ross Ice Shelf grounding zone (2015), accomplishing a suite of surface, borehole and bottom measurements, imaging and recovery of water, biological specimens, basal ice and sediment cores. Subglacial lake microbial and marine macrofaunal communities were documented and sedimentological and glaciological data are providing evidence of basal melting, sediment flux, and a changing grounding zone depositional system.

This session will provide a forum to present and integrate results from all subglacial research projects (not limited to WISSARD), including survey data and ideas for future subglacial bed access projects.
