Research Interests
William (Bill) Muntean (he/him) is a non-resident Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He was a career Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State for over twenty years. His diplomatic career culminated with him serving as the U.S. Head of Delegation to the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting in 2022 (Berlin) and 2023 (Helsinki). He also led the 2020 U.S. inspection team, which conducted unannounced inspections of three Ross Sea stations. He remains active in Antarctic topics, including serving as a member of the U.S. Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names (ACAN) and writing about the governance, geopolitics, tourism, and history of Antarctica.
